In July, HKUST announced a plan to build the world's first twin physical-virtual campuses in the metaverse, which will ease access to resources for all their students, who are split between the main physical campus in Hong Kong and another physical campus in Guangzhou, a metropolitan city in mainland China. The metaverse will also allow the university to give blockchain-secured diplomas or transcripts in the forms of non-fungible tokens (NFT) and create content, including avatars and tokens, in its virtual ecosystem.

Students can take 17 blockchain-related classes, including three courses in computer science and engineering. HKUST has the most blockchain-related classes in mainland China and Hong Kong.
